Groningen
Groningen ia a small town in the north of Holland, about two and a half hours away from Amsterdam. My brother Andrew and his girlfriend are living there - playing, teaching, and studying at the Groningen conservatorium. Andrew has already been there a year and a half. The town (like all of Holland) is very flat so we rode bikes everywhere. There werent enough to go round when we all wanted to go out so --->
-- I'd sit on the back of his, as everyone does. This freaked me out! We rode on the roads with the traffic. I'd have my legs dangling out to the side, and suddenly a car would overtake us, missing my feet by a good 6 inches, or sometimes the buses would cruise right behind us. Like a jockey on horseback, although freaking out that I was about to be run over, I'd be shouting to Drew, "Faster Faster - man, seriously, I've got a bus on my a-se !!" ... We'd pull over and let the bus pass...

A Jazz club in Groningen - "The Spiegel". This was the only jazz club in Europe that I found to be open. Most jazz clubs close down over the summer, or perhaps open but have no music on. This is because so many people go to the sea for their summer break, and also summer is festival time so heaps of people travel to the fests. As well, it doesn't get dark over there till about 11pm, so when music would generaly be on, people are still outside enjoying the short time of extended light that they have in the year.
Gronigen's main town square - a beautiful summers day.
Just trying to be 'arty' - I call this one - "Hand picking up chip in Dutch cafe"
A festival parade in the town square !
Klogs ! These wooden shoes are commonly worn by Dutch farmers out in the fields. They're also a popular tourist souvenir.
I'm bigs !
