2003 Montreux International Solo Jazz Piano Competition
The Petit Theatre in the Montreux Palace, where the semi finals and finals were held.
... with James Williams. One of the great jazz pianists of our time. James is from Memphis but lives in New York. He was one of the judges of the piano comp, and also played two gigs in the jazz club with Cameron and Jamie.
Accepting 5th place from the director of the jazz festival, Claude Nobs.
Cameron and Jamie with the winner of the comp, Tigram Hamasyan, 15 years old, and from Armenia. Remember this name. He's going to be huge !
After the comp, all the piano players went back up to one of Claude's chalets and wined, dined and jammed together through the evening. Claude had two pianos in this room - one of them was the piano that both Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans used for their live at Montreux albums. We all played duets together. This photo is me with Ilia Efimov from Russia. This was a moment I will cherish forever - having all these piano players in the one room together jamming I'm sure wont happen for a long while again. Everyone was so different. It was great to hear the different sounds and styles that people from different parts of the world have.
